Hygge Days

I started reading a really cool book recently, Holy Hygge, by Jamie Erickson, which brings together many ideas that I feel are a true sense of my identity. If you haven’t caught the Hygge (pronounced HYOO-guh) trend yet, it’s a Danish way of life that is basically translated into the feeling of ‘cozy’. It is a way of feeling contentment and wellbeing. To me it’s that feeling of a deep sigh when I finish something that takes work like a clean house on a Saturday morning, completing a crossword puzzle, or as simple as wearing slippers on a cold morning. Within this book, the author shares the Danish truth that “your outer life will always affect your inner life”(Erickson, 2022). This brings me such conviction to continually think about what is on and in my ‘outer life’. As a said in a recent post, it isn’t that ‘stuff’ is important. But the ‘stuff’ that you surround yourself with shows a lot about who you are and what you believe about people and life.
As I started notetaking on writing this blog, a song came on my playlist…”Ordinary Days” by JJ Heller (who is a PHENOMENAL singer, by the way). It tied in so nicely with where I am coming from in MY outer life. Some of her lyrics suggest: “the days are moving slowly but the years go by so fast..let me linger in the moments before they turn into the past”. THIS is where I find my sweet spot. Ordinary moments that bring joy.

My current ‘office’ is outside. It is early summer and every morning has been GORGEOUS. I take turns bringing our cat, Meow, and dog, Reese, outside with me. They love to watch (or chase) the birds and rest by me while I journal, read, and pray. We listen to the birds on the breeze and watch the sun go across the sky. It beats sitting in an office, any day. I am much more productive when I enjoy my surroundings and can focus on my true work, supporting others in any manner I can. These moments TRULY bring me a sense of HYGGE.

How often do you feel that way?
Is there a way to bring more of that into your life?
